Two Free Starter WordPress Themes

I’ve prepared two of my go-to WordPress themes for immediate release. My hope is that WordPress beginners should find these templates easy to work with as they start to customize their own themes and advanced WordPress developers will find these themes sufficient with which to work.

The first theme is HAL. HAL is a derivative of the infamous Kubrick theme, the WordPress default for a while now. The HAL theme strips away all the custom Kubrick baloney and images to give you a nice blank slate with header, footer, content and sidebar with which to work. HAL is perfect for business-like sites which will enjoy the flexibility of the WordPress CMS but don’t intend to use blog features like comments (and may not even have a blog at all!).

The second theme, default-HTML5, is basically the same thing, except it is written in more forward-looking HTML5, and includes some nice Microformat touches. There is really no good reason not to write a site in HTML5, just as there is no good reason not to write a site in XHTML. However, I prefer the brevity of HTML5 much more these days.

The quick and dirty way I started developing my own custom themes for WordPress was to copy the default folder then change the directory name, theme name in the CSS and swap out the screenshot for a shot of my comp. Then I’d activate and start tearing up code. These two themes aim to streamline this process for beginners. Keep a copy nearby if you need to reference how a section of PHP works.

I hope you enjoy these themes. You can find them available for download immediately from my WordPress page.
