The Ritual of Sipping Whiskey

1. Choose the right glass Although most may reach for a tumbler, whiskey aficionados prefer the tulip glass. The fluid curve of this glass concentrates the spirit’s aroma.

2. Tilt, turn and coat Pour a tasting of ½ to 2 ounces into the tulip glass. Then, tilt and turn the glass to coat the sides with whiskey to release the aroma.

3. The rules of H2O Most whiskey purists prefer to enjoy their drink neat (without water), as water dilutes the flavor. If adding water is your preference, use bottled mineral water rather than tap so that chlorine and other elements don’t interfere with the taste.

4. Roll between the hands Before taking a sip, roll the glass between your hands—the heat from this action releases the whiskey’s flavor and aroma. This is especially important if you’ve added water so that the two are thoroughly blended.

5. Finally, take a sip Take in just enough to coat your mouth. Slowly swirl it around your tongue, observing its consistency, or “mouthfeel,” which is an essential part of enjoying whiskey.

6. Savor before swallowing Hold the whiskey in your mouth for a few seconds to appreciate the nuances of flavor and aroma. Slowly swallow the spirit, then inhale through your mouth and exhale through your nose. This is the final stage of tasting referred to as the “finish.”
